Metropolis

I have a lot to say about this piece, so please bear with me:

On my recent visit to the Vancouver Art Gallery I discovered the work of the Trinidadian/Canadian painter Denyse Thomasos. Her massive architectural paintings really spoke to me. I used one of her paintings called Metropolis as inspiration for this piece. Working on it was so complex and multilayered, I often tried to imagine how the artist approached certain challenges in the piece. It was so satisfying to reach and stretch and use methods I haven’t applied before.
In researching her work after my visit to the VAG I discovered that Ms Thomasos died tragically at age 47 from an allergic reaction to a dye used in an MRI scan.

The brown frame is 6 1/2 in. x 6 1/2 in. x 1/2 in. and the cross-stitched piece is 3 1/2 in. x 3 1/2 in.
